Information is very essential in every human endeavour and has been rightly describes as the fifth factor of production by some scholars. It is therefore important to understand the various ways in which information use affects humans and society.

AIM

This course aims to give you an understanding of the role of information within institutions, communities and the society at large, and how information use has leveraged modern technology for the provision of services in all aspects of human life.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The overall objectives have been specified so as to achieve the aims set out above. In addition, each unit has specific objectives set out. The unit objectives is defined at  the beginning of each unit. At the end of this course, it is expected that students will be able to:

  • -         Understand the impact of information in society
  • -         Distinguish between the types of information
  • -         Describe the Information and Communication process
  • -         Understand current trends in information and communication technology
  • -         Understand the economics and ethics of information use.
  • -         Determine the role information plays in national development

 

STRUCTURE

The course is structured into eleven course units, to be taught over a twelve week period as outlined in the text.

 

EVALUATION

Evaluation for the course will encompass class participation and attendance, assignments, and interim assessment and an end of course examination.
